Yes. An undershirt gives perspiration somewhere to go before it reaches the shirt everyone can see. A sleeved undershirt is particularly useful because it puts fabric directly between your underarms and your outer shirt.

For everyday wear, look for breathable fabric with genuine moisture-wicking or moisture-management performance. Bored Rebel Graphic Undershirts™ are made with moisture-wicking fabric for exactly this reason.

Look for something lightweight, breathable and moisture-wicking. The right base layer can help move perspiration away from your body and keep your outer shirt drier without automatically making you hotter.

No. And here’s the part that trips people up:

Ordinary untreated cotton is not naturally a moisture-wicking performance fabric.

Cotton is naturally absorbent. It readily takes up water, which is why it makes a great bath towel. But absorbing sweat and moving sweat away from your body so it can evaporate are not the same thing.

Cotton fabrics can be specially engineered or treated to improve moisture management. But if an ordinary 100% cotton undershirt makes no wicking claim, we would not assume it wicks.

Start with moisture management, breathability, comfortable fabric, enough length to stay tucked and a fit that works underneath your clothes without creating unnecessary bulk.

Then think about what matters specifically to you: collar construction, durability, odor control, extra sweat protection, a particular neckline or whether you want the shirt to look good enough to wear on its own.

If you’re wearing it underneath a tucked-in dress shirt, yes. Tuck the undershirt in too. You want it staying put underneath everything else.

An untucked dress shirt is more interesting. There isn’t one universal rule. The important thing is that the undershirt never hangs below the outer shirt and doesn’t create an obvious bunch of fabric around your waist.

If the undershirt is short enough to sit naturally underneath the untucked shirt, leaving it untucked may look best. If it’s a longer stay-tucked base layer, you may prefer to tuck it in.

Neither is universally better.

Some traditional stylists and menswear experts will tell you an undershirt should never show. If invisibility is your goal, a V-neck or deep V gives you more room to open your dress-shirt collar without revealing the undershirt.

But times have changed. A quality crew neck deliberately showing underneath an open shirt is also a completely normal modern look, and we happen to think it can look great.

It’s an option. Here’s why you might want to.

A lightweight undershirt can give you another layer of sweat protection, keep body oils off the polo and add coverage.

Just pay attention to fit. You don’t want extra fabric bunching underneath, and with a crew neck, some of the neckline may be visible depending on the polo. That isn’t automatically wrong. It’s a style choice.

It’s an option, and there are some good reasons to do it.

An undershirt puts a washable layer between your body and the sweater, which can help keep perspiration and body oils off a garment you probably don’t want to wash after every wear. It can also make a scratchier sweater more comfortable and add a little warmth.

You certainly can, and quarter-zips actually make a pretty good case for one.

Part of the shirt underneath is often visible when the zipper is open, so a clean-looking crew-neck undershirt or t-shirt works especially well. You also get the practical benefits of a washable layer underneath the quarter-zip.

This is one of those situations where having an undershirt that also looks good as a t-shirt is particularly useful.

Many regular t-shirts simply aren’t particularly good at the job.

They may be too thick, loose or short. They can bunch underneath a dress shirt, trap moisture instead of managing it, or create visible lines. And if there’s a conventional graphic across the chest, you also have to worry about it showing through.

Sometimes. Price alone doesn’t tell you whether an undershirt is good.

Paying more can get you better fabric, moisture management, shape retention, collar construction, fit, sewing, quality control, specialized features or better design.

Longevity matters too. An undershirt that costs more but still fits well and looks good years later can be a much better value than a cheap shirt you continually replace. Cost per wear can tell you more than the price tag.
